La Mediterranee / De middellandse Zee

Bruikleen: Stichting Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen 1961 BEK1401 (MK)

La Mediterranee / The Mediterranean Sea

Loans: Stichting Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 1961 BEK1401 (MK)

This personification of the Mediterranean Sea, with its round shapes and smooth bronze skin, is a beacon of peace. The attitude, the distribution of the limbs of the subdued picture are in perfect balance. Maillol pursued the classical ideals of harmony and simplicity. For him, the Mediterranean was the center of ancient civilization.
