Summary
[edit]DescriptionWH6W9712 1.jpg |
English: With the 5th floor railing rotated 180 degrees, and the soffit rotated only 90 degrees, the top (i.e. interior) of the soffit is shown here, visible through the railing screen. The largely intact Bituthene membrane, which had been located under the concrete finish surface, suggests that the wood framing was largely protected from rainwater intrusion. The shadows and few remains of the LVL joists are visible on this interior surface of the soffit. The LVL joists had decayed to the point where they would not support their own weight, and were reduced to particulate solids. This raises the question, How did 13 people get onto the balcony before its sudden collapse? The answer is that the remaining ceramic surface materials, such as stucco, acted as a brittle box beam which was relatively rigid until its catastrophic failure. |
