The Columns of the Gediminids on the coins means that the Principality of Smolensk is a vassal state of Vytautas the Great and Lithuania.
Lietuvių: Lietuvos didžiojo kunigaikščio Vytauto Didžiojo Smolensko kunigaikštystės moneta (nukalta 1399–1401 m.) su Gediminaičių stulpais ir rusėnų liūtais ar leopardais. Gediminaičių stulpai reiškia, kad Smolensko kunigaikštystė yra Vytauto Didžiojo ir Lietuvos vasalinė valstybė.

Lily-shaped tails, which symbolizes a sovereign ruler, therefore such Vytautas' coins must have been minted after the Pact of Vilnius and Radom in 1401 when Vytautas became fully in charge of the Lithuanian affairs.
