UN the following aiorning, beina^ again fur-nished with horses by the Aga, we left the townby the gate of Bethlehem, and descended intothe valley of Jehoshaphat, in whose sides aresepulchral excavations. We continued under thewalls of the town, and turned to the north to enterthe valley of Siloe, whose brook flows beneaththe modern walls at the foot of the Mount ofOlives. The field of blood, now called Akel Forar,*or, the field of jars or pottery ; the spot w^herethe ^ews counselled against Christ; the well ofNehemiah ; and the miraculous impression of ourSaviour s hands, shown on the rock, which tradi-tion ascribes to his fall when the multitude pre-cipitated him down the valley; were here pointed out to us. ANCIENT MONUMENTS. 647 highly worthy of attention. The first, at thehead of the valley of Siloe, is said to be the tombof Zachariah* This is a square building cut outof the rock, by which it is surrounded on threeof its sides ; they are about ten feet each : theheight of the monument is about fourteen feet,surmounted by an entablature and cornice, in-cluded in the height above named ; and on whichis a pyramidal roof, terminated by a cylindricaltop : at each angle of the sides of the tomb aretwo Ionic pilasters, and, in the centre of thewalls, two columns of the same order. It iswithout any entrance. The name of Isaiah is attached to a secondmonument, of nearly the same dimensions andarchitecture, except that the roof is a cupolasurmounted by a cube. In the space between the above monuments isan excavation in the rock, having a fagade likethat of the portico of a Greek temple, con-sisting of two Ionic columns in the centre ; oneach side of which are pilasters of the same order,,complet
