On June 17, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a stunning true-color image of the Volga River Delta and the swirling colors of the Caspian Sea.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The lush greens and muddy browns of the broad Volga River Delta and braided floodplains of the Volga Delta stand out in sharp contrast to the dry tan tones of the surrounding land. The Volga River winds across Russia for about 2,300 miles (3,700 km) before pouring into the Caspian Sea. It drains over 1.3 million square kilometers of catchment area, acquiring large loads of sediment that settles into the Delta or flows into the Caspian Sea. The Volga is the primary source of fresh water for the brackish waters of the Caspian Sea. On June 17, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a stunning true-color image of the Volga River Delta and the swirling colors of the Caspian Sea. Where the runoff from the Volga pours into the Caspian Sea, sediment – and possibly blooms of phytoplankton – color the brackish water with a variety of tans, greens, and aqua.
