A Praça São Francisco representa o coração da parte alta de São Cristóvão, constituída para ser o centro da cidade e abrigo das estruturas políticas, judiciais e religiosas. O espaço foi construído no final do século XVI e início do século XVII e permanece ao longo desses mais de quatrocentos anos uma rica fonte de resgate histórico e também de identidade. O próprio nascimento da Praça e seus entornos são merecedores de atenção, sendo um legado do período da União Ibérica. Nesse contexto, o local apresenta influências tanto portuguesas como espanholas, contribuindo para essa visível riqueza histórica. Do ponto de vista arquitetônico, da Praça São Francisco é possível apreciar o palácio do período colonial onde funciona o Museu Histórico; e também prédios das ordens religiosas, como o Museu de Arte Sacra e o Convento de São Francisco. Todos eles continuam praticamente com a mesma feição de quando fundados.
