Summary[edit]

Description
English: A treasure of women's history

Treasure hoards often contain a set of standardised objects, which may represent a particular theme. These thematic treasures usually contain whole objects, and items made from other materials, not just silver.

A treasure hoard from Fargelanda in western Sweden, contains a set of objects which may reflect the themes of women and womanhood - including a large trefoil brooch, beaded embroideries and different types of pendants. However, the Fargelanda treasure may also have another theme - the power of memories of the distant past. Earlier gold treasures from the 5th and 6th centuries often contained a similar set of ornaments - a large brooch, beads and pendants.

We do not know exactly what such themed treasures mean, but the people who planned and arranged the burial of the treasure would have understood the messages encoded in this arrangement of objects and the references to the past. Perhaps at Fargelanda this treasure hoard was arranged by the Lady of the House, to create a picture of female identity, inherited from the past, and to celebrate her own memories of powerful ancestral women.
