Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The light green area (centre to right in the image) at the foot Philopappos Hill (Hill of the Muses) is where the ancient Road of Koile (5th cent. B.C.) left the city of Athens and headed to the peninsula of Piraeus (left edge of the image). The road was protected on the right side by the Right Branch of the Long Walls and by another wall build in close distance from the left side of the road. The Left Branch of the Long Walls started approximately where the hill ends on the left edge of the image and headed to Phaleron, the harbour of Athens before Piraeus. Phaleron is located to the left of the peninsula outside the frame of the image. The mountain in the centre is the island of Salamis, and opposite Salamis on the right edge of the image is Mount Aigaleo. On the top of the mountain, King Xerxes allegedly placed his throne to watch the naval battle which took place in the Straits of Salamis in 480 B.C. Both Athens and Piraeus had their own fortifications. The Long Walls (5th / 4th cent. B.C.) united the fortifications of Athens and Piraeus.
