Notes

Catalogue raisonné:

  • F838: Faille, Jacob Baart de la (1970) [1928] The Works of Vincent van Gogh. His Paintings and Drawings, Amsterdam: J.M. Meulenhoff, no. 838 .
  • Although executed in the Hague, it predates by almost ten years Vincent's Hague period works of 1882-1883. De La Faille assigns it the number XV amongst Vincent's juvenile works. It appears to have been part of a sketchbook for the five or six year daughter Betsy Tersteeg of the art dealer Vincent worked for at the time (de la Faille p. 600). Tersteeg was later to exercise a somewhat equivocal influence in Vincent's development as an artist.
