The commandant of the district,Captain Stephenson (called in the Egyptian serviceBimbashi, i.e. Major) took pains to make me feel athome. His post in Tambura was no sinecure, forwhen he was appointed the people were quite unac-customed to Europeans, so that the task of procuringfood and bearers was not an easy one. Stephensonwas the first European commandant, his predecessorhaving been a negro officer. His staff comprisedan Egyptian captain, an Egyptian lieutenant, aSoudanese lieutenant, a Syrian doctor, and fiftyblack soldiers. (Illus. 209.) The station itself wasvery primitive, being composed of grass and mudhuts. The discipline was excellent, and the behaviourof the natives was much more respectful than in theadjoining French colony; they fully realised thatthe Europeans had the upper hand, and when neces-sary would take steps to punish rebels.
