I understand that plans have been submitted to theCommittee on Public Information with regard to estab-lishing in this country a department of exhibitions. TheBritish government has already created such an organiza-tion. Last March there was held in New York an officialexhibition of lithographs under the auspices of the Britishgovernment. This exhibition reflected Britains effortsand ideals in the great war. The section of the exhibi-tion showing Britains efforts contained such titles asMaking Soldiers, Making Sailors, Making Guns,Building Ships, Womens Work, Work on theLand, and Tending the Wounded. The section en-titled Britains Ideals contained such subjects as TheTriumph of Democracy, Poland, a Nation, and TheRe-birth of the Arts. These lithographs, some in blackand white, others in color, were drawn by some of themost highly gifted of Englands artists, including WilliamRothenstein, Charles H. OF OLD NEW YORK Ham Nicholson, Frank Brangwyn, and Augustus John.During June this exhibition was held at the Brooklyn In-stitute of Art, and during the first two weeks of Augustit was shown at the Print Room of the Jesup MemorialLibrary in Bar Harbor, Maine. For the past two years William Orpen, one of Eng-lands greatest painters and draughtsmen, has been de-picting events at the front. These drawings and paint-ings, which were shown in London recently, have beenpresented by the artist to the nation and are destined forGreat Britains ultimate War Museum. The French, too, have been fully alive to the greatvalue of pictorial propaganda. Extremely interestingwere the paintings by Lieutenant Farre of actual engage-ments in aerial combat, and most valuable as recordsbecause technically accurate, which were exhibited inNew York last winter.
