d a fence allaround. The occupant was said to be feeble-minded andwas always in charge of an attendant. He was said tobelong to a well known family. It is about the earliestrecollection I have and I can only remember that any oneso afflicted appealed to my boyish mind as somethingghostly and I never cared to go very near the place. Theold house seemed to disappear quite suddenly, for I donot recall any particular circumstance connected with itsdemolition. On Fifteenth Street between Seventh and Eighth Ave-nues there was a very well liked Catholic institutionknown as the Sisters Home. It was a prominent build-ing in those days. It is there yet, but somewhat over-shadowed by its tall neighbors. But they can neverdwarf what those splendid sisters have done, which afterafter all is the important thing. On this same street is arow of red brick houses with white marble trimmings.They were all private residence houses in those days.They were built in the 40s by the Astors and are nice ( 56 )

As if toemphasize the old saying, the nearer to church the fur-ther from grace, we might record that the well knowndance hall keeper Billy McGlory lived in the block below.But that was before he adopted the career which madehim so unfavorably known. The old Weber piano buildings are still standing onSeventh Avenue and Seventeenth Street. They were builtlong before I was born; and pianos were made inthem for years and years.
