of Fifth Avenue. The streets cutthrough it are filled with elegant private residences, andthe imposing Church of St. Thomas and part of the resi-dence of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., are opposite the north-ern boundary of the plot on 53rd Street. Mr. Beinhauer and his wife were devout members ofthe Lutheran Church. They regularly rode in the oldfamily gig to and from their homestead to service on Sun-day in the church of their choice, and stopped at thehomes of their children in turn on the way home for thenoonday meal of the rest day. Mr. Beinhauer died on August 23rd, 1832, from anattack of cholera, which was then epidemic in the City,after an illness of only a few hours. He is buried inThe Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Beinhauer died in 1829,and is buried in the same plot. Mr. Beinhauers heirs were his eight surviving daugh-ters, and several grandchildren, among them the childrenof his widowed daughter Susannah Loss. His other chil-dren were: Catharine Harsen, Elizabeth Loss, Sophia ( SO)

The estate was settled under the administration ofJohn Shrady by private sale. The plot that was accumu-lated at a cost of slightly over $4400.00 was sold for about$21,000.00, and is now worth more than that many mil-lions. A large part of the land was bought by BenjaminStephens in 1834. THE VILLAGES OF OLD NEW YORKOld Chelsea Robert Hall Beginning at the north side of Fourteenth Streetdirectly opposite the boundary of Greenwich village isthe next of the two villages of Old New York, which re-tains to this day some of its old individuality, though per-haps in a less degree than its more famous neighbor tothe south. Like Greenwich it too was founded by an English sea-faring man and like his friend Admiral Warren, Capt.Clark named his estate after another English village—Chelsea; and so to these two Englishmen we owe theperpetuation on Manhattan Island of these w
