York most merchants eitherlived over their stores or had their residence within easywalking distance. There were very few of the latter.There were not many private carriages kept and such asexisted were known and recognized by every one. Therewere a few stages running out in the country to Green-wich, Chelsea and other villages, but most of the travelwas on foot. The city was mostly below -ChambersStreet, so that one could walk from about any section toanother in a very short time. Now all this is changed.They tell me that the railroad operated by electricity andrunning entirely underground extends for fifteen miles—to the Kings Bridge at the very end of the Island, andthat the time consumed in the journey is less than 50minutes. When I went to the Kings Bridge in my dayit took the greater part of ten hours to make the journey. The sin of prolixity is ever present in an old man suchas I am. Having recorded another milestone in the His-tory of old New York I will now subside. ( 128.1
