shwick ave-nue as it is today. It crossed the old Newtown road atthe same point it crosses Flushing avenue now and ran ina southeasterly line into Jamaica road at the present pointof junction. It is one of the few very old roads that havesurvived the destroying hand of time and has taken ona new lease of life that promises to stretch far into thefuture. Today it is a splendid highway, constantlythronged with all sorts of vehicles from automobiles todelivery wagons, and is rapidly being built up on bothsides with fine residences. Already it occupies an im-portant place among the great thoroughfares of the me-tropolis, and has become somewhat distinguished sincethe election of Mayor Hylan, whose residence is at No.959. Flushing avenue from Navy street to the intersectionof Broadway runs nearly parallel with the old Wallaboutroad and from Washington avenue to Broadway is identi-cal with it. Beyond that point Flushing avenue is the oldNewtown road as shown above. The Wallabout road (212 )

Gen. Grants house, 3 E. 66th Street, where the great soldierlived for many years. OF OLD NEW YORK made a considerable digression from the present straightline of Flushing avenue to the south between the Navyyard and Washington avenue, and again a slight bend tothe south near Marcy avenue just before merging withthe Newtown road at Broadway. In laying out newstreets these kinks and irregularities in the old roadswere straightened out and the most direct way frompoint to point chosen, but in this instance the course of theold road and the new avenue is almost similar.
