Samuel Samuels,still remembered by many New York-ers and one of the most celebrateddeep sea skippers sailing from thisport. She was originally a Red CrossPacket Liner and later in the Cali-fornia trade. Few ships ever enjoyedsuch popularity. On February 4th, 1859, she logged313 miles on a single days run on afamous voyage from Liverpool to NewYork, completed in 13 days 8 hours. She was finally lost among therugged cliffs and roaring breakers ofCape Horn. Her crew was rescued.She was a strikingly handsome shipand for years was the pride of theport. She was owned by Governor E. D.Morgan, Francis B. Cutting, DanielOgden and others.
