The renaissance of ( 23 ) VALENTINES MANUAL our merchant marine is nevertheless a strong probability.At the close of the war, our Navy will have been aug-mented to incredible numbers, both in men and ships.The importance of sea power has never before beenbrought home so strikingly as it has in the past year ortwo. Small wonder is it, therefore, that our Govern-ment should be giving serious thought to the developmentof her long lost supremacy on the high seas. Another installment of these famous old ships will fol-low the first and be continued until the series is com-pleted. It will embrace practically every well-known shipsailing from this port up to the outbreak of the Civil Warand the opening of the Suez Canal, which marked the endof a period forever glorious in the history of Americanships.
