Работа поступила в Русский музей в 1918 году из художественного бюро Н.Е.Добычиной, Петроград; ранее – собрание М.Горького (дар автора), Петроград.

Воспроизведена в журнале «Жупел» (1905, № 1). Традиционно композиция связывается с событиями 9 января 1905 г. в Петербурге. По предположению И.С.Зильберштейна и В.А.Самкова, изображен разгон демонстрации в Москве, близ Училища живописи, ваяния и зодчества в октябре 1905.

Одна из самых острых сатир на царизм времени первой русской революции 1905-1907 годов создана Валентином Серовым, с начала 1890-х годов выполнявшим заказы царской семьи. Она появилась под впечатлением разгона войсками мирной демонстрации. В знак протеста Серов отказался от почетного звания действительного члена Академии Художеств, президентом которой был великий князь Владимир, командовавший войсками столичного гарнизона. Саркастически звучит уже само название работы – строка из русской солдатской песни. Композиция была подарена Максиму Горькому, входившему, как и Серов, в редакцию журнала «Жупел».
