Drinking rice alcohol (choum-choum) out of a communal jar is part of the traditional welcoming ceremony of the Lao Villages. In this photograph visisting Laos Government village workers have been welcomed by the village chief in the left foreground with a drink.

The team has now been accepted by the villagers, who base their standards of acceptance not upon speeches and promises, but upon accomplishments and efforts. Here, the villagers, and part of Civic Action team share a communial jug of rice beer.
