Upon his return he built a good home inHyrum and secured a farm of one hundred and fifty acres near the town. When Hyrumstate was organized in the fall of 1901 he was chosen counselor in the stake presidency,which position he ably filled until honorably released in 1904 upon his removal toLogan to engage in the implement business. He remained at that place until 1910 andthen became a resident of Salt Lake City. He has preached the doctrines of democracy long and loud, in most counties ofthis state and in some parts of Idaho, Arizona and Nevada, and many give him creditfor their conversion to that party. He is a fair and honest politician. While residing at Hyrum City he filled various local offices, including those ofmayor, justice, attorney, surveyor and school trustee, and he also served as commis-sioner, surveyor and attorney of Cache county. Still more important political officeswere conferred upon him, for in 1882, in 1887 and again in 1895 he was a memberof the constitutional convention of the territory of Utah. In 1897 he was elected torepresent his district in the legislature and was made chairman of the committee onappropriations. On the 13th of March, 1914, he was appointed by President WoodrowWilson to the office of surveyor general of Utah for a term of four years and was re-appointed on the 21st of March, 1918.
