Lake valley, where he had a number of friends andacquaintances. He had become a member of the dominant church in Utah and finallydecided to cast his lot witji those who were then laying the foundation for the greatstate of Utah. He successfully carried on business in Salt Lake and Davis counties fora number of years. Later he removed to Cache county, where he located and success-fully operated the first sawmill ever built in that section of the state. In 1864 heremoved to Summit county, where he engaged in the stock and ranch business, freight-ing, livery, merchandising and mining business. He was one of the first to settle inPark City and laid out a portion of that town. He served on two missions to Englandand the eastern states for his church and was bishop of Wanship for a number of years.He likewise was probate judge of Summit county for six years and took a prominentpart in the business, civic and religious affairs of his community. His death occurredMarch 11, 1887, in Park City.

UTAH SINCE STATEHOOD 259 Willard P. Snyder received his first schooling at Wanship and later at Park City,where the greater part of his early life was spent. When about eighteen years old hebegan his business career, first in the teaming and ranching business, being associatedwith his father for about five years, their ranching interests being in Summit andMillard counties. Mr. Snyder had grown up in a mining atmosphere such as haspervaded Park City for many years and half unconsciously became well versed inmining matters, acquiring a general knowledge of the business when but a young man.His first connection of importance with the mining industry was in 1889. He wasone of the men who helped organize the Gold Mountain Mining District and madea number of locations. From these came the Annie Laurie property which was soldwith others in 1899, bringing the owners a good profit, and it was Mr. Snyders firstbig mining success. In 1900, with associates, he bought the St. George copper mining
