pater-nal grandparents of George H. Smith were George, Sr., and Sarah (Harris) Smith, whocrossed the plains to Utah in 1860. George Smith, Sr., was a coach painter and housedecorator in London, England, and followed that business after coming to Salt LakeCity. He was a well known citizen of the twentieth ward. George Smith, Jr., was buta boy of sixteen when he came to Utah with his parents. When a young man he wasemployed on construction work by the Union Pacific Railroad, then building throughWeber Canyon. Subsequently he was similarly engaged on the Oregon Short Line Rail-load. He acquired a practical knowledge of civil engineering and at times had chargeof men in construction work. When the Oregon Short Line was in operation he becamea locomotive engineer and hauled some of the first trains over the road. He died in1874, when about thirty years of age. Mrs.Smith is still living and when not making her home in Salt Lake City resides at LongBeach, California. George H. Smith, the only child of his parents, was a pupil in the public schools ofthe capital and afterward went to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he entered the Univer-sity of Michigan for the study of law. There he won his LL. B. degree upon graduationon the 21st of June, 1899. He then returned to Salt Lake City and entered the law firmof Williams, Van Cott & Sutherland as a law clerk. At the end of six months Mr. Wil-liams withdrew from the firm and in connection with Mr. Smith devoted his attentionto railroad law. Mr. Williams was the general attorney for the Oregon Short Line Rail-road and Mr. Smith acted as his assistant.
