Herrington has from a small beginning through his own business abilitydeveloped an enormous canning business and is today one of the heaviest stockholdersin the Utah Canning Company of Ogden, of which he is the president and manager.The story of his lite is the record of unfaltering endeavor, guided by sound judgment. He was born upon a farm in Dunlap, Harrison county, Iowa, May 4, 1870. Hisfather, Rufus E. Herrington, was born in Detroit, Michigan, and with his removalto the west became a prominent figure in industrial circles. In 1865 he entered uponcontract work with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Company for building sta-tions in Illinois and Iowa and was thus engaged until 1904. He married Rosana MarySkidmore who passed away when her son Herbert was but five years of age, her deathresulting from a runaway accident. She was a native of Springfield, Missouri. Thefather has also passed away.

HERBERT L. HERRINGTON UTAH SINCE STATEHOOD 1053 Spending his youthful days in his native state, Herbert L. Herrington pursued hiseducation in the district schools of Iowa and in the public schools of Denison, Iowa. Heremained upon the home farm until he reached the age of sixteen and then entered theemploy of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company, with which he remained foreighteen years, gaining various promotions in that time. He occupied the position oftelegraph operator, train dispatcher and served in other capacities with the WesternIowa division, between Boone and Omaha. In 1902 he came to Utah, settling at Ogden,and for a year was with the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company, and for fouryears with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, in the superintendents office. Hethen left the Southern Pacific to enter into active connection with the Utah CanningCompany, Inc., accepting the position of bookkeeper.
