Extravagant headdresses and masks to celebrate the New Year in Urnäsch, Switzerland

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In a handful of communities in Appenzell, Switzerland, the New Year is celebrated twice, on Dec.31 and Jan.13. Groups of five individuals sporting common themes parade through the communities, greeting the farmers with the new year. The masks and headdresses are all hand-made by the farmers during the cold winter months. The tradition is called "Silvesterchlausen"
