Summary

[edit]
Description Lot-5410-5: Stars and Stripes floating above German Ensign on U-111. On 19 April 1920, the first German submarine brought to the United States after World War I, U 111, arrived at New York. In June 1921, U 111 sank near Cape Henry, Virginia, while being towed to be a target for the Atlantic Fleet. Deemed a navigational hazard, U 111 was salvaged by USS Falcon (AM 28) and properly sunk off Cape Charles, Virginia, in September 1922. During World War I, U 111 sank three Allied merchant vessels which included the British steamer Boscastle on 7 April 1918. Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels Collection. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. Courtesy of the Library of Congress. (2016/07/22).
