United States Ensign from USS Wake (PR-3) 14.5 x 9.25 inches Fabric NHHC 1965-66-A

Headquarters Artifact Collection: Naval History and Heritage Command

USS Wake (PR-3), a Guam class gunboat, was commissioned in December 1927 in Shanghai, China as part of the Yangtze Patrol. Originally commissioned as USS Guam (PG-43), the ship patrolled Chinese inland and coastal waterways, protecting American interests. During Japanese advances into Chinese territory in 1937, Guam evacuated American diplomats and citizens from areas of conflict. In January 1941, the ship was renamed USS Wake.

The ship was captured while in port in Shanghai on the morning of 8 December 1941. This event occurred shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as it was 7 December east of the International Date Line.

Japanese Special Naval Landing Force troops boarded the ship, which surrendered and became the only US ship captured intact during World War II. This small United States ensign was removed from USS Wake by Seaman First Class Masaichi Fumoto along with a medallion he found onboard. Fumoto kept the items for over 23 years before presenting the items to the US Consulate in Japan, who in turn returned the items to the US Navy in March 1965.
