Description / Descriptions : This handsome young officer is seen in a 3/4 pose with head slightly turned to face the viewer. He is flatly painted with short and wavy hair and heavily emphasized dark eyes and eyebrows, characteristic of the style of the artist. Frederick Buck (1771-ca. 1839/40) was born and worked in Cork, Ireland and practised his art there until his death. His services were in great demand during the Peninsular War when many officers passed through the busy port. To meet the demand he is known to have had a large supply of stock portraits on hand to which he added the heads and appropriate regimental facings. This uniform comprised of a red coat with beige lapels and collar and gold trim has the number 96 painted on the white regimental band. The costume is completed by a white shirt with front ruff and black cravat. Under the glass on the verso is a plaited brown hair token, likely the sitter’s hair. /

Ce jeune officier de belle allure est représenté de trois-quarts, avec la tête légèrement inclinée pour faire face à l’observateur. Son uniforme comprend un manteau rouge garni de revers et d’un col beiges. La passementerie de couleur or sur la bande régimentaire blanche représente le nombre 96. Une chemise blanche à fronces et un cache-col noir complètent l’uniforme. Sous le verre, au dos, se trouve une mèche de cheveux bruns entrelacés, vraisemblablement ceux de l’officier.
