DescriptionUmm Qais - Remains of Temple to Zeus Olympios.jpg |
English: Remains of Temple to Zeus Olympios in Umm Qais. Despite devastating earthquakes and centuries of looting by builders wishing to re-use ancient stones for newer buildings, there is still enough left of this ancient temple to recognize it as a 2nd century BC Greek temple in the Doric style. It was most likely built to honor Zeus Olympios, an aspect of the Greek god widely worshiped in the Near East. Ancient coins minted in Gadara in the 1st century BC depict Zeus sitting in a Doric temple with four columns. |
