This ceremony concluded three weeks of at-sea training in various maritime safety and security courses given to 46 African maritime professionals from Ghana, Senegal and Sierra Leone aboard the APS platform. Courses included maritime law enforcement, small boat operations, small boat engine repair and maintenance, medical and damage control training. Johan de Witt, a Royal Dutch Naval vessel, is the first European-led APS platform and is augmented by staff from Belgium, Portugal and the United States. APS, originally a U.S. Navy initiative, is now an international effort aimed at improving maritime safety and security for the continent of Africa through training and other collaborative activities with African partner countries.
