English: SOUTH CHINA SEA (April 13, 2009) Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate Terrence Asyn, assigned to Assault Craft Unit One (ACU-1), navigates a landing craft utility into the well deck of the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) as a CH-53E Sea Stallion helicopter comes in to land on the flight deck. Essex and ACU-1 Sailors worked together to transfer 65 Armed Forces of the Philippines Marines from the beach to the amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) in preparation for exercise Balikatan 2009. Essex has been invited by the Republic of the Philippines to participate in Balikatan, an annual combined, joint-bilateral exercise involving U.S. Military and Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel as well as subject matter experts from Philippine Civil Defense Agencies.
