Summary[edit]
DescriptionUS Navy 040811-N-0000N-006 Hospitalman Apprentice Luis E. Fonseca, Jr., stands with his spouse.jpg |
English: Camp Lejeune, N.C. (Aug. 11, 2004). Hospitalman apprentice Luis E. Fonseca, Jr. stands with his spouse shortly after Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England presented seaman apprentice Fonseca with the Navy Cross for heroism during the battle of An Nasiriyah, Iraq, in March 2003. Under attack and without concern for his own safety, Fonseca braved small arms, machine gun and intense rocket-propelled grenade fire to evacuate wounded marines from a burning amphibious assault vehicle. He stabilized two casualties with lower limb amputations with tourniquets and administered morphine, while organizing the evacuation of four wounded marines, again exposing himself to enemy fire to treat wounded marines along an offensive perimeter. His timely and effective care saved the lives of numerous casualties. |
