English: At sea aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Aug. 28, 2002 -- An F/A-18C "Hornet" assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron Two Five (VFA-25), launches from catapult four during flight operations. The F/A-18 Hornet, an all-weather aircraft, is used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. In its fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense; in its attack mode, it is used for force projection, interdiction and close and deep air support. Lincoln and her embarked Carrier Air Wing Fourteen (CVW-14) are transiting to the Arabian Gulf to conduct combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
