Description
English: 020122-N-9777F-002 Misawa, Japan (Jan. 22, 2002) -- Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Herbert G. Chappell loads sonobuoys into a P-3 "Orion" aircraft. Sonobouys are a directional frequency and ranging (DIFAR) device, and are deployed from the aircraft to search for underwater submarine activity. Chappell is assigned to the "Fighting Marlins" of Patrol Squadron Four Zero (VP-40) currently deployed to Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan.
