Description
English: View of the forward flight deck of the U.S. Navy of the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CVA-38) with many planes of Carrier Air Group 2 (CVG-2) on deck. CVG-2 was assigned to the Shangri-La for a deployment to the Western Pacific from 13 November 1956 to 20 May 1957. Identifiable aircraft are:
  • a McDonnell F2H-3 Banshee of Fighter Squadron 64 (VF-64) "Freelancers" (right);
  • eleven Douglas AD-6 Skyraider and three AD-4Q (painted dark blue) of Attack Squadron 65 (VA-65) "Fist of the Fleet" (right);
  • three Grumman F9F-8 Cougar of VF-63 "Fighting Redcocks" (left);
  • seven North American FJ-3 Fury of VF-24 "Corsairs" (left forward);
  • two Vought F7U-3 Cutlass of Experimental Squadron 4 (VX-4) Det.A "Evaluators" (left, on the bow).
