Description The U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA-2) underway off the coast of Nicaragua in July 1979 with U.S. Air Force rescue helicopters (Sikorsky HH-53s) and U.S. Army logistics helicopters (Bell UH-1D/H Hueys forward) on her flight deck. Saipan’s operational career began with this deployment, when she was diverted from Fleet Refresher Training to Special Contingency Operations, for possible non-combatant evacuation of American personnel during the Nicaraguan Revolution.
