Description The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Shields (DD-596) moored alonglside the submarine tender USS Nereus (AS-17) for a two-week upkeep period, circa 1966. The destroyer was serviced by the sumbarine tender as part of a U.S. Navy program to diversify tender services for an overall increase of repair ship effectiveness.
