Summary[edit]

Description The ship's officers and crew of the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Mertz (DD-691) on a pier, with Mertz tied up behind them. Probably taken at San Diego, California, circa early 1946, while the ship was being prepared for decommissioning. Note that the barrels have been removed from the 40 mm twin gun mount just forward of the ship's bridge. The destroyer was decommissioned on 23 April 1946 and never recommissioned before being scrapped in 1971. USS Gregory (DD-802) is immediately outboard of Mertz.
