Description |
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Decatur (DD-936) receives serious topside damage in a collision with the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39), after suffering a steering casualty and running under the carrier's bow overhang, 6 May 1964. The two ships collided while Decatur was clearing the carrier after underway refueling operations. Decatur proceeded under her own power to Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia (USA), accompanied by USS Gearing (DD-710). Note the Grumman S-2F Tracker parked forward, and Decatur's mainmast breaking away. No personnel were injured during the collision. |
