Summary[edit]

Description The U.S. Navy scout cruiser USS Chester (CL-1) steams through ice fields while en route to Hamburg, Germany, in late December 1918. The destroyer USS Aylwin (DD-47) is following astern. The two U.S. Navy ships were operating under the auspices of the Allied Naval Armistice Commission, and were to conduct an inspection of German Baltic Sea ports. Note Chester's anti-submarine battery on her stern, consisting of a pair of depth charge racks and two Y-Gun depth charge throwers.
