Description
English: FORWARD OPERATING BASE HOTEL, Iraq Sgt. Joey W. McBroom, a Marine Corps infantryman currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, displays the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal he was awarded during a ceremony here Jan. 28, 2005. The 30-year-old Lafayette, Tenn., native received the medal for his professional achievements as a squad leader with 2nd Platoon, Company C, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), during combat operations in Najaf, Iraq, in August. The following is from McBroom's award citation: Without regard for his own safety, he exposed himself to accurate enemy sniper fire, rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire while emplacing his squad in the Najaf cemetery. As he identified an enemy sniper, Sgt. McBroom engaged with precise rifle fire, terminating him at more than 450 meters. Later, when the platoon's command post was hit by an enemy 82 mm mortar, he supervised the evacuation of the platoon commander to the company's casualty collection point and then repositioned the squad to prevent any further injuries from enemy mortars. When an adjacent platoon took a direct hit from enemy mortar fire, he supervised the evacuation of injured Marines, and maneuvered the squad to ensure the company's flank security. His managerial ability, personal initiative, and unswerving devotion to duty reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
