DescriptionU.S. Department of Energy - Science - 276 003 004 (16625682731).jpg |
IMAGE FROM A HIGHLY POLISHED FUSED QUARTZ SURFACE, WITH HIGH CONTOURS OF WHITE AND LOW CONTOURS OF BLUE. THE TOTAL ALTITUDE RANGE IS LESS THAN TEN MILLIONTHS OF AN INCH. THE PHOTON SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPE UTILIZES LIGHT WHICH IS TOTALLY INTERNALLY REFLECTED INSIDE A PRISM, RESULTING IN AN EXPONENTIALLY-DECAYING EVANESCENT FIELD JUST OUTSIDE THE REFLECTING SURFACE. THE SAMPLE CAN BE AN INSULATING DIELECTRIC MATERIAL (BIOLOGICAL), SCANNED UNDER AMBIENT CONDITIONS BY THE OPTICALLY CONDUCTING TIP THAT ALLOWS TUNNELING OF PHOTONS TO A DETECTOR. THE RESOLUTION IS PRIMARILY GOVERNED BY THE WAVELENGTH OF LIGHT USED, BUT HAS EASILY EXCEEDED THE THEORETICAL LIMIT FOR CONVENTIONAL OPTICAL MICROSCOPES.
