Summary[edit]

Description
English: On August 23, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of two tropical cyclones making a dual appearance in the western Pacific Ocean. At the time this image was acquired, Typhoon Soulik, the western-most storm, was poised to strike the Korean Peninsula while Typhoon Cimaron, in the east, was prepared to rake Japan.

Typhoon Soulik made landfall at Daejeon, South Korea on August 23, 2018, less than 90 miles (145 km) south of Seoul. According to the Korea Herald, the storm battered the southern region, damaging buildings and roads, causing power outages, and leaving one person missing and two injured. Soulik was rapidly weakening as it passed over the Korean Peninsula and will passed over the eastern coast as an extra-tropical system on August 24.

Typhoon Cimaron struck Japan’s Honshu Island on August 23 with maximum sustained winds near 86 mph (139 km/h) with higher gusts. It weakened quickly as it passed over the island. On August 24 at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued the final bulletin on Extratropical Storm Cimaron. The storm had crossed central Japan and was emerging into the Sea of Japan. It was centered near 40.8 degrees north latitude and 137.7 degrees east longitude, about 161 miles west of Misawa, Japan. Cimaron was moving to the north-northeast and had maximum sustained winds near 52 mph/83 km/h.

Both storms brought drenching rains, floods, transportation closure and some power outages as they passed over South Korea and Japan.
