Description |
English: William H. Wilcox settled in Tacoma in 1890, where he opened a secretarial office, sold typewriters, and took up photography. He went to work for the customs office in Port Townsend in 1897. Aside from ten years in California, Wilcox spent most of his life in the Pacific Northwest. Until his death in 1940, he photographed family, friends, homes, boats, buildings, and street scenes, recording a half-century of changes in everyday life.
In this 1900 photo, probably taken in Port Townsend, two young girls sit on a porch with a doll and a contented-looking cat. The girl on the left, wearing buttoned shoes, is Rosetta Klocker. Like other girls of the time, they wear dresses and leather boots, and their hair is in ringlets.
