Summary[edit]

Description

One in two Zambian children are stunted or chronically malnourished as a result of a poor diet, inappropriate feeding practices, high levels of infection, poor hygiene and sanitation. Micronutrient deficiencies are very high – with 54% of children suffering from Vitamin A deficiency.

Globally, DFID is supporting the development of bio-fortified staple crops through Harvest Plus, as an innovative and promising way to reduce micronutrient deficiencies. In Zambia, the trial will provide much needed evidence to support the roll out of the Vitamin A or “orange maize”. The trial is providing two meals a day to 1,258 children. Some of the children are being fed with orange maize and some with the traditional white maize. The children on the photo are receiving the orange maize meal.
