rhoea. Animalfood in the form of beef scrap, milk, fish or other proteincarrying food is absolutely essential to the rapid growthof ducks—or for that matter any other kind of poultry. Some feeders make a practice of using a larger proportionof corn meal the last few weeks before killing, but we havenever found any gain in this method. Ducks are grossfeeders, but are notional about changes and when contem-plated the change must be made.with care and very grad-ually, otherwise the birds will go ofif their regular feed andevery meal lost means a shrinkage in profits. While per-haps no fowl makes more rapid growth where conditionsare favorable, none shrink more rapidly when either foodor management is faulty. If the brooder floors are sanded or graveled there willbe no real need for other grit the first week, though to salvethe feelings of those who wish to help them along a littlesand or prepared chick grit may be mixed in the feed.Water should be always within reach. Always means night
Text Appearing After Image:
owo Q bi) g ?ou O uo M u V or PRODUCING MARKET DUCKS 75 and day. Use any type of fountain which can be easilycleaned and filled and into which they can get only theirbills. They should be able to get the full length of the billinto the water else there is always danger of the nostrilsclogging and making trouble. Have the water near thefood which may be fed in long, narrow, shallow troughsso the feed will be well distributed and accessible withouttoo much crowding. The water should be near, as duckswash dowm the food and run constantly from trough tofountain and return. Any avoidable waste of effort countson birds that are supposed to be in prime condition formarket at ten weeks old and we want to raise table poul-try and not sprinters. Grit and oyster shell should be handyfor their use. The shell may be something of an extra, butthey will eat more or less and, as they are marketed un-drawn, it may be the last feed eaten and it weighs well.Small Flocks Grow Best. A hundred or more duck
