Français : Lettre de Toulon sur Mer à Bône / Annaba (Algérie) du 2 mai 1881

Cette lettre est adressée à "Monsieur Moye Commandant de l'Aviso le Cassard". Ce batiment militaire à vapeur, lancé en 1866, participait alors à "l'Expédition Tunisienne", euphémisme pour conquêté coloniale de la Tunisie par la France. Le 2 mai 1881, jour de l'envoi de ce pli, le Cassard, avec 9 autres navires militaires, prenait position devant Bizerte qui se rendait sans combattre. Militairement la messe était dite et le 12 mai 1881, le bey de Tunis reconnaissait sa défaite en signant le traité du Bardo qui transformait son état en protectorat français. Les quatre canons de l'aviso Cassard prirent part en juillet 1881 aux bombardements navals de Sfax et de Gabès qui firent plusieurs milliers de morts et établirent l'ordre français au sud de la Tunisie.

Bien que destinée à un militaire français, cette lettre a été acheminée par la poste civile comme l'atteste le cachet de transit par Marseille au verso. Elle a toutefois bénéficié de la franchise comme le montre l'absence de timbre et de mention de taxe. (Cassard (1866–1894), a Talisman-class aviso) ship
