Description

Editorial cartoon in "The Mascot" newspaper, New Orleans, 15 July, 1893. Entitled "Tug of War", shows the statue of Henry Clay which for 2 generations had been at the intersection of Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue. To right, two figures with rope try to pull it, while to left two other figures with rope try to hold in in place. (This was in reference to debate about moving the statue to Lafayette Square, since the well known landmark was becoming an impediment to traffic due to increased traffic and electric streetcars.) The figures trying to move the statue are labeled "Progress", with an electric lightbulb head and a body made of locomotive machinery, and "Public Opinion", a woman dressed as a goddess or muse from Classical antiquity. The figures trying to hold the statue in place are unlabeled; one is a man dressed in the fashion of c. 1860, and the other appears to be a crawfish or lobster.

Notes: Those familiar with local geography will recognize that Lafayette Square is actually to the left of the scene shown. The debate went on for some years, with the statue finally moved to Lafayette Square in 1900.
