Summary[edit]

Description
English: On December 18, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Kenanga spinning in the Southern Indian Ocean. At the time this image was acquired, Kenanga sported a large cloud-filled eye with large, thick bands of thunderstorms surrounding the center and was strengthening. It reached peak maximum sustained winds of 135 mph (217 km/h) reached on December 19. As Tropical Cyclone Kenanga moved over cooler water temperatures on December 20, wind speeds began to drop. On December 20 the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC)’s afternoon advisory reported that Kenanga was located approximately 890 mi (1,432 km) southeast of Diego Garcia and was tracking slowly westward. The storm had lost its eye and there was significant erosion of eyewall convection and deep convective banding over the northwest quadrant. Maximum sustained winds were about 104 mph (167 km/h) at that time. Tropical Cyclone Kenanga was expected to track steadily westward/southwestward while undergoing steady weakening until dissipation over open ocean.
