Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. Hoewel verschillende cultures werden onderhouden in Suriname, was suiker (suikerriet, Saccharum officinarum) een van de meest winstgevende plantagegewassen.
Suikerriet werd in 1640 in Suriname ingevoerd en was vanaf 1700 op plantages in cultuur. Suiker was lange tijd het belangrijkste exportprodukt van Suriname. Als er over de slavernij in Suriname wordt gesproken, wordt de zin: "Hoe duur was de suiker?" dan ook vaak gebruikt, verwijzend naar de zware levens van de slaven. Later werden contractarbeiders uit India en het toenmalige Nederlands-Indie ingescheept, die voor een karig loon verder werkten op de plantages. Deze foto is uit de jaren 50 van de 20ste eeuw.
