Biología: Son bivalvos que se encuentran en fondos costeros arenosos o en arrecifes coralinos. Junto a 6 otras especies conforman la familia de las tridacnas. Espectaculares por los colores de sus mantos, simbióticos con microalgas y por el impresionante tamaño que alcanzan. Tanto es así que no es la primera vez que un incauto buceador queda apresado entre sus valvas al intentar tocar su manto. Son hermafroditas. Crecen relativamente rápido. varios cm de arco de concha al año. Su forma de alimentarse es por filtración a través de su complejo braquial. Y el sifón claro que forman con su manto. Llegan a tamaños en que su concha mide un metro y pesa más de 200 kg. Alimentación: En su dieta constan todo tipo de microorganismos planctónicos, especialmente de microalgas. No son selectivos. Tiene la particularidad de fijar materia inorgánica por fotosíntesis gracias a la simbiosis que mantiene con microalgas. Actúa en cierto modo como un coral. Si la microalga muere por condiciones lumínicas inadecuadas la tridacna también morirá. Distribución: Se distribuye por todo el Océano Pacifico y por el Índico.
